you may already know that weight-bearing exercises are important in preventing osteoporosis, especially in post-menopausal women.
as an addition to this... today, Goljan (pathology audio lectures) taught me that astronauts that are up in space for an extended period of time are prone to osteoporosis due to the lack of gravity and ultimately the lack of stress on their bones. this is why astronauts that have returned from space are carried off the spaceship (can't walk off - their bones are too fagile) and are given bisphosphonates (drugs that act by inhibiting osteoclasts which resorb bone), calcium and vitamin D.
saw "wall-e" this evening. what a cute movie. makes you want to hold someone's hand. :)
in the movie, the level of pollution has become so severe that humans now live in space aboard a ginormous spaceship. this spaceship is fully automated and people spend their whole lives on hover-chairs that take them everywhere & have mini robots that wait on them 24/7. the movie then goes on to explain that basically everyone on the ship has osteoporosis because of the lack of walking/no stress on the bones.
such a cute AND smart movie! now only if i could find that combo in a girl!

pretty good.
just got home from watching the dark knight. i thought it was pretty good. heath was pretty crazy. probably the best movie i've seen all winter (north american summer). better than iron man, better than kung fu panda and DEFINITELY better than indy. i hear that wall-e is quite good, but that doesn't open up down under until mid-september or so!
but this movie's left a bad taste in my mouth. i feel that making this movie definitely could've pushed heath over the edge or at least contributed. i know it was an "accidental overdose", but...

stop eating shark fin soup! STOP!
if you haven't seen this documentary yet, you have to watch it. it's a film called "sharkwater" by rob steward (no not ROD steward - rob). and he's canadian too!
it's about sharks and how they are misrepresented by the media as bloodthirsty, human hunting monsters. it hints at how sharks are a vital part of not only the underwater ecosystem of the world but of the very ecosystem in which we live & depend on. it then focuses on the billion dollar business of shark finning. there is some gruesome footage of fishermen catching sharks for their fins, cutting them off and then discarding the now-finless-but-still-alive sharks back into the water to die.
i've never had shark fin soup before. never really wanted to. but this definitely turns me off to it. and plus, i'm told it has no real taste to it. it's usually served in a chicken or beef broth! people eat it for its "texture" and their completely misplaced beliefs of health benefits. and of course don't forget the status that comes with being able to afford it.
stop. watch the movie. and if you're feeling like some soup, go eat some pho instead.
*****
managed to get in 30 hours of study this week. didn't make my goal.
should've got in much more. was not very efficient.
current gear: stuck in 5th.

forgot to mention: i'm going down to adelaide during my week off in june! yay! i'm going to fly down with my brother to see my cousins stella and clara - yes clara! she's flying down from sydney. it'll be a mini family reunion. harri? justin? wanna join us?

run fat boy run! run like the wind!!!
feel like running lately.
as a matter of fact, have slowly started running again. roughly twice a week, covering ~5km in about 40 minutes. and so far the knee is doing alright. we went running as a house - susan, laura, matt, myself - on saturday and we got caught in the rain. COMPLETELY SOAKED.
i've never been a great distance runner. and don't know where this drive to run is coming from.
maybe it's from watching that movie "run fatboy run".
or maybe it's cause a friend of mine just completed her first marathon.
or maybe it was my interview with this 87 year old man at the hospital. for an 87 year old, he was in tremendous shape. he says he ran marathons until he was in his 60s and still ran 5km daily right up until his late 70s. (i know what you're thinking: "so if he's in such great shape, why was he in the hospital then?" smarty pants. for YOUR information, he was admitted for a pulmonary embolism, most likely due to the fact that he had surgery 2 months ago to repair a hernia and then recently spent 3.5 hours on a plane - sitting still cause the people in the aisle seats fell asleep - flying from new zealand to australia).
or even still, maybe running is our generation's pre-mid-life crisis THING. seems like a LOT of people are picking up running. while my blog tallies up the number of hours spent studying, other blogging friends like cinshum tally up the distance she's covered running, swimming and biking. all in preparation for a triathlon down the road.
there is a short 12km, Bridge to Brisbane run in september. i think that's a good place to start.

before the devil knows you're dead.
it's dark, sick and twisted and that's what makes it so good. kind of like that movie closer - with julia roberts, natalie portman, jude law and clive owen.
it's out on DVD now. definitely worth the $5 rental.
the story revolves around these 2 brothers that are in desperate need of some money so they concoct a plan to rob a jewelry store. things don't go as expected and they find themselves in a much bigger mess than they had initially bargained for.
there is a scene in this movie that i found to be hilarious.
let me set it up... gina (marisa tomei) tells andy her husband (philip seymour hoffman) that she's leaving him and that she has been having an affair with andy's younger brother hank (ethan hawke). andy doesn't have much of a reaction to this and instead in a complete dead-pan voice asks: where are you going?
to which gina replies: i was just going to go to my mother's.
andy: how you going to get there?
gina: i was going to take a cab.
*pause*
gina does a little pout and a bit of a puppy face and says: i could really use some money.
at this point andy throws some bills on the kitchen counter and says: i'll go to the bank later.
ahaha! that's funny. come on. that's hilarious! the fact that he's giving her cash to catch a cab and leave him? gold.
also stars albert finney.
the title comes from an irish saying that goes something along the lines of:
may you be in heaven half an hour...

immature?
caught the movie "forgetting sarah marshall" tonight.
it was pretty funny. i enjoyed it. it was what you'd expect from judd apatow & the 'knocked up' / '40-year-old virgin' crew.
i was just thinking... i wonder if my years of enjoying silly raunchy comedies - romantic comedies for guys - are slowly coming to an end. i mean SHOULD they be coming to an end? would it be so bad to enjoy movies like this when i'm 25? (nah, not at all). how about 30? (hm... nope. still good). but 40? (???).
who am i kidding?
i'm still young. 40 is light years away. sure. call me young and immature!
if you're planning on seeing this movie, its hilarious. but be forewarned. there is some full frontal nudity. male nudity.

broken umbrellas and broken tails.
do you remember my beautiful (read: hideous) green umbrella with flower patterns on it? the one that i used shamelessly? it broke yesterday. i swear i didn't break it on purpose. i didn't throw it against walls or under buses. it just broke. will need to go out and get another one soon, it's supposed to rain all week.
yesterday there was a tiny TINY little gecko that was running around the house. i let it be until it went into my room. i didn't want it to go into my pillow case or my school bag, so i caught it. i trapped it with one hand and tried to pick it up by its tail with my other hand. when i finally got my thumb & forefinger on its tail & pulled gently, the tail fell off! i guess that's one of their defense mechanisms. the coolest thing though, was that the tail, now separate from the body was still moving! it flopped around from side to side.
did you know...
by the time your pillow is 3 months old, 70% of its weight is due to dust mite feces?!? yes. it's true. you're probably sleeping on dust mite feces.
i will put more photos of the house soon.
speaking of the houses... we inspected well over 20 houses during our house-hunt. but there's this one house that i remember quite distinctly. there was just something really odd about it. i can't put my finger on it. maybe it was the colour combo of the carpets and the sun-dried look of the wallpaper. maybe it was the velour sofas upstairs. maybe it was the indoor sauna. it was just really creepy. it was like something out of a horror/thriller movie. the craziest thing was that when the 3 of us walked out of the house, we all looked at each other and almost simultaneously said "that was weird". we struck that house right off of our list. i don't really believe in haunted houses but this one had a really weird vibe.
saw JUNO on friday night. what a great movie. very indie & felt very canadian. then again ellen page & michael cera are canadian, not to mention it was shot in vancouver & the director jason reitman is also canadian. it's definitely got my stamp of approval.
what i'm listening to right now: 2nd period of the leafs vs. sens game on AM640. we've just blown one 2-man advantage & we've just been given another 2-man advantage. leafs are up 2-1.
song that's been on repeat on iTunes: "you and i both" by jason mraz.

warning: monster post ahead.
picked up a few books from a girl who just finished her intern year and was looking to get rid of her textbook stash. i managed to pick up...
-o'callaghan and brenner's kidney at a glance
-rohen's color atlas of anatomy and
-davidson's priciples & practice of medicine.

all for $50. some of them are slightly older editions but $50! i'm happy.
i then walked around the CBD (central business district) with a camera in hand, looking like a major tourist. i don't think i've ever put up any pictures of downtown brisbane. have i? well here are a few...
WAIT! before i get to the CBD, i don't think i've ever posted up a picture of the med school either...

from there i jumped on the busway and headed towards the city.

first things first. this is my favorite gelato place in brisbane. probably just as good as "hollywood gelato" on bayview in toronto.

the gelato place is just across the street from brisbane city hall and the museum of brisbane.

this stately looking building USED to be the state treasury building. it now houses brisbane's conrad treasury casino & hotel. oh well.

queen street is probably the equivalent of yonge street back in toronto. however it's a pedestrian-only street. it's kind of cool. there are restaurants down the middle of the street with stores lined up on either side. there's always at least 1 street performer trying to make a living. today there were 2. one guy that climbed poles and did hand-stands on them...

and another playing a didgeridoo.

ok. that's the end of our brisbane tour for the day.
i know. i know. this is my 4th post in 4 days.
a blogging friend says that she blogs when she's bored or upset. i blog when i'm bored, when i need to procrastinate, when i just want to share something and sometimes - just sometimes, when i'm homesick. like when i post about what i'd like to eat and stuff like that. don't worry. i'm not homesick now.
homesickness - such a weird thing. kind of like lovesickness. it comes and goes in waves. one moment you're fine and then BAM! suddenly it hits you. like last night, i was watching the movie "man of the year" with robin williams. good movie. it was shot in toronto. no doubt about that, you can see UTS, king college circle, metro toronto convention centre, what looks like the gym of leaside high school, what used to be a ford dealership on lawrence & birchmount... i love watching movies that are shot in toronto & trying to figure out exactly where they shot it. everyone knows "good will hunting" has severals scenes in one of the lecture halls of MP (McLennan Physical Laboratories) at UofT. you can see forest hill p.s. and its lawn in vin diesel's "pacifier". adam brody's "in the land of women" - not a particularly good movie by the way, has a scene in yorkdale's food court. ok. i'm getting carried away. what i was gonna say was that while watching that movie, i got strangely homesick. seeing all those toronto sites, kind of made me miss home. weird. that's never happened before...
in other news... of course now that i'm abroad, i find myself visiting, tsn, the globe & mail, the star and the like more frequently. and it's not just me. other friends that are away from toronto confess to taking greater interest in what's going on in toronto than they did while they were living there! is it just because we don't want to be completely disconnected? again, i'm getting distracted. what i actually wanted to direct your attention to was this article. crazy no? sounds like something out of some wacky korean drama!
oh! one more thing. finished coupland's "the gum thief". if you haven't read it yet, don't bother. seriously. now "the time traveler's wife" on the other hand is fantastic. i've just started it. i should have picked it up when she first recommended it.

educational movie.
since we got back from the holidays all we've been talking about at school is pregnancy.
first week was a case focused around assisted reproductive technology (ART), then it was a teenage unplanned pregnancy and just this past week our case was on genetics and down's syndrome.
so to wrap up all of our learning on reproduction and in particular UNPLANNED pregnancies, we went out to see the movie "knocked up".
what a great movie! it was funny as hell but sweet and touching at the same time.
for those of you that don't know, it's written by the same guy that wrote 40 year-old virgin. and stars canadian seth rogen and katherine heigl (from grey's).
it's not quite as raunchy as 40 y.o. virgin but it's not exactly kosher. definitely a good laugh. go watch it.
for those of you that have already seen the movie, how hilarious was dr. kuni? hahaha! did you know that ken jeong, who played dr. kuni is actually a real physician and stand-up comic? yep. did his undergrad at duke, his med degree at u of north carolina and his residency in new orleans. see. doctors can be funny too!

pros & cons of being student...
went to see my first movie in oz last night. we ended up watching BREACH. the movie's based on the true story of robert hanssen the ex-FBI agent responsible for the "worst intelligence disaster in US history". I enjoyed it. chris cooper was eerily good in playing hanssen and ryan phillippe's role as a newbie-agent-wannabe was played to the tee. (my friends think phillippe is a lousy actor but i don't think he's that bad. especially with that baby face of his and in roles like this one and crash). if there was a downside to the movie, it'd be that it probably could've used a couple of plot twists here and there. but i guess that's what you get with a based-on-a-true-story movie.
where am i going with this and the title of this post?
well, the movie was $5.70. student fare is FIVE dollars and SEVENTY cents.
you don't believe me do you? i knew you wouldn't so here's proof.

ah... it's good to be a student.
on the other hand...
started my house hunting today. didn't go quite as well as i had hoped.
the two places that i looked at were - although cheaper than my current place - nowhere near as good as my current place. they were both further away. instead of the 7 minute walk it takes me now, it'd probably take closer to 15 or 20. the first place was a dump. there's really no other way to put it. 5 guys living in the house. kitchen was a mess, there were probably a dozen grocery carts in the garage and don't even get me started on the washroom.
the second place was small without much natural sunlight. and the first question i was greeted with when i knocked on the door was "where are you from?" WTF?!?!
i gotta make a few more calls tonight and hopefully check out a few more places tomorrow. i definitely don't think i'm being too picky. but perhaps my expectations are a tad high. it's true. you get what you pay for.
arg... it's sucks being a student.
